The Chennai High Court has ordered the state government of Tamil Nadu to cleanse the city water resources Cooum and Buckingham Canal and refurbish them.

Following the reports that effluents and wastes dumped in Cooum River are carried to the Bay of Bengal causing pollution, the Chennai High Court took up an enquiry on its own.

The enquiry was conducted by the panel of the Chennai High Court Chief Justice (in-charge) Kuluwadi G. Ramesh and Judge Tikkaraman.

The panel ordered that the state government should immediately take measures to cleanse the Cooum, Adyar and Buckingham Canal rivers, reclaim them and bring them to the original condition.

The Chennai High Court further ordered that a separate department should be set up for this purpose and these rivers, full of natural beauty, must be restored and dedicated to the public with entertainment features.

The panel informed that these rivers have been rendered highly polluted due to the wastes from residential areas and the effluents from various industrial units and other offices. They strongly suggested that this river water must be recycled and used for agricultural purposes.

The panel ordered that the state government of Tamil Nadu must explain their plans before 30th March.

The panel also recommended that funds for this project can be collected from the traders and other communities and tax exemption can be given for this contribution.
