Chennai Corporation Budget to be presented soon

The Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. T. Kathikeyan has announced that the budget of the Corporation is scheduled to be presented during the end of March.
It is notable that this budget will be presented without the presence of the city mayor or local administration representatives.
Traditionally, the Chennai Metro Corporation budget is presented during March every year. In case the parliamentary or legislative assembly elections are scheduled to be conducted during March, the budget will be presented earlier, before March.
Every year, the Corporation’s Standing Committee Head will present the budget in the presence of the city mayor and the district collector.
With the tenure of the mayor and the local administration representatives having expired in last October (2016), and the local elections not being held, the citizens had doubts whether the Chennai Metro City Corporation Budget will be presented for this year (2017).
In this regard, the Chennai District Commissioner T. Karthikeyan explained that it is planned to present the corporation budget before the end of March. The preparatory activities for presenting the budget are in full swing. This will not be a type of interim budget – it will be a complete budget presentation. The budget is being prepared under the guidance/supervision of a financial consultant.
The district Assistant Commissioner of Revenue and Finance will act as the Head of the Standing Committee Head and present the Corporation Budget. A special Officer – the District Collector – will be acting on behalf of the city Mayor. So the budget will be presented for approval in the presence of the special officer. After the local elections when the local administrators are appointed, the details of the budget will be released to the public.
During the last year, the budget for the financial year 2016-17 was presented at a value of Rs. 5123 Crores. It is expected that this year’s budget will be exceeding this amount.
