3 new metro rail routes to be introduced

Three new metro rail routes across 114 km distance are likely to be introduced. A magnificent depot spread over 2 lakh square meter will be set up for the same.
As of now, the Chennai Metro Rail Services is functional in two routes. Airport to Chinnamalai, and St. Thomas Mount to Koyambedu are the two routes. Nearly 70 percent of works are completed and by end of this year, all the works will be completed, according to metro rail sources.
Now, as the second phase of metro service, studies are being conducted to set up three new rail routes.
In this regard, officials from the metro rail state that the three routes likely to be set up now are Madhavaram to Siruseri, Madhavaram to Sozhinganallur, and Nerkundram to House. This will cover a distance of 114 km. Inspections in different aspects for the same have got completed.
We have mapped subway and overground routes to set up these metro tracks. There will be higher distance covered overground than underground. This project will involve an expense of Rs 45,000 crore. We have decided to obtain approval for the same from centre and state within March 2017.
