Facility to Apply online for new Ration Cards from 1st November

Over the last few years, being unable to arrange and issue new ration cards, additional sheets have been stuck in the existing old ration cards and used in the PDS (Public Distribution System).
With the existing extended old ration cards, it will be possible to buy items only up to December 2016.The government has planned to issue new smart cards (smaller in size and palm-held) and activities are in progress for the same.
New electronic equipment has been set up in all ration shops to buy items through the new smart ration cards.The new electronic equipment will have all data regarding the family ration cards. The facility to scan and link the Aadhar card number is also available in the new equipment.
Though 85 percent work is completed in many districts, only 55 percent work has been completed in Chennai district.The activities to set up new equipment in the 2000 ration shops in Chennai Metro commenced last month is yet to be completed and is in progress. So, an extension has been given till 15th November. It has been advised to scan and register the Aadhar card details as well.
Meanwhile, all the ration shop employees working in 33500 rations shops throughout Tamil Nadu have been instructed to sell/distribute items only through the new electronic equipment (even without the smart card) from 1st November.
It is recommended that it is better to commence selling items through the new electronic equipment even without the smart card as it would be helpful in filling the details of the ration-card holders who had not registered till now. Also, any errors/ omissions can be corrected in the data entered.
So, the public will be sold ration items through new electronic equipment from 1st November. SMS would be sent in this regard to the cell phones of the ration card holders.
This SMS has to be shown to the ration card employee to buy the required ration items.
For the people who come to buy without the cell phone, details of the items will be written on a small chit and given to the buyer.Further, the people who are interested in getting the new smart ration card can now apply online as well. However, they have to scan the requisite documents while applying online.
Field-checking will be done by visiting houses and new smart ration cards will be given in 2 months. It is also planned to collect original documents as proof while distributing new smart ration cards.
Further, tasks like addition/deletion of names, change of address, etc. can easily be done online. Activities to introduce these facilities is in progress.
