As a move to enable public sector enterprise give 4G mobile services to customers, about 300 new 4G towers will be set up in Chennai city within March 2017. We will step into the 4G space. We will announce tenders to set up these 4G towers in the city. We hope to install all of these 300 4G towers all set for functioning by March 2017, said Ms. S.M. Kalavathi, the Chief General Manager of Chennai Telephones, speaking at a press conference here on Monday. About 40 places in Chennai are selected for this broadband network expansion.

In three of these places, our works are already started. In case of any fault in the broadband connection, it took about three or four days to rectify, CGM said.

People cannot live without internet even for half an hour. We need to work at quick turnaround time in case of flaws. We strive to reduce the turnaround time to one day or even less.

Targeting to provide unhindered internet supply, we have staff members working even on Sundays. Married couples work throughout the week and resolve all issues on Sundays. There are a few who also work on Sundays. She added that they are planning to expand their resources and increase number of working Sundays.

In the past three months, BSNL saw about 20 lakh new mobile connections every month. In Chennai region, it holds about 11 to 12 percent of its market share.

Under its Corporate Social Responsibility Program, two villages including Minjur and Athur are adopted and digital access is provided to them, Ms. Kalavathi said. These villages will receive Wi-Fi hotspot. More number of such villages will be adopted too, she added.
