Madras High Court to be called Chennai High Court henceforth

After a recent cabinet ministers meeting, the central minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has informed that Madras High Court will be henceforth called Chennai High Court.
The cabinet ministry meeting, headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given approval for Calcutta High Court to be called Kolkata High Court and Bombay High Court to be called Mumbai High Court.
The name of the Madras city was changed to Chennai.After that, the state government requested that name of the high court also to be changed accordingly.
As per the Indian High Court Act, 1861, the High Court located in Madras was named as Madras High Court. However, that act was scrapped later.
The name Madras was changed to Chennai. Following this, all establishments except Madras High Court and Madras University changed their names to start with Chennai.
However, one section of the public was of the opinion that if the name was changed from Madras, the future generation may not at know that the city was under British Rule for some time.
Based on this, the central government, which accepted the request to change the name to Chennai, informed that all aspects will be considered before taking a decision.
Now, the government headed by Modi has approved the name to be changed from Madras High Court to Chennai High Court.
This comes into immediate effect. Similarly, Mumbai & Kolkata High courts had also requested for change of names. The name Bombay was changed to Mumbai during the year 1995. Calcutta was changed to Kolkata during the year 2011.
The central government has accorded approval for the changes as Kolkata High Court and Mumbai High Court.
The central cabinet ministry has also accorded approval for setting up a port in the area near Kulachal in Kanyakumari district.
