Vegetable prices start falling

As the quantity of vegetables transported from the states of Andhra and Karnataka has increased, the prices of vegetables have started coming down in Tamil Nadu.
Though vegetable plantation is done in many districts in Tamil Nadu, the growth was less during the severe summer months of April, May, and June leading to shortages and then the price rise.
The prices of tomato, beans, and broad beans exceeded Rs. 100/- per kg. Brinjal, Arbi (yam), and lady’s finger were sold at Rs. 60/- per kg.
The growth and harvest of vegetables have commenced in the states of Andhra and Karnataka and thus increased quantity is available since last week to transport to Tamil Nadu. So, the prices of the vegetables in the cities of the state of Tamil Nadu including Chennai have started falling.
The prices of vegetables like tomato, brinjal, potato, yam, Green Chile, lady’s finger, carrot, beetroot, radish, and broad beans are from Rs. 25/- to Rs. 35/- per kg.
As the quantity during the coming weeks is likely to increase, the traders expect the vegetable prices to come down further, especially after Ramzan.
Though the prices of most vegetables are down, the price of raw banana is rather high. It was sold at Rs. 7/- to Rs. 8/- per piece last week, the price shot up suddenly yesterday to Rs. 10/- per piece. The reason given was that banana usually was transported from Andhra in 20 lorries has now come down to only 10 lorries.
