In order to cope up with the price of tomatoes in Chennai, the tomatoes are being sold for Rs 61 per kilo in farm-fresh veggie outlets. The co-operative department has asked that all the farm-fresh veggie outlets should be opened on Friday for the convenience of the general public.

For the last few days, the tomatoes are being sold for a whooping price of Rs 80 per kilo. The tomatoes were sold for Rs 80 at the Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable Market. In other major markets, tomatoes were sold between Rs 90 and Rs 100. The poor and middle class people have started avoiding tomatoes. At this juncture, the tomatoes were sold for Rs 65 yesterday at Koyambedu market.

Union Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan while speaking to the media said that the price rise in tomato was seasonal and tomatoes could not be stored due to a short shelf-life unlike wheat and rice.

Pradeep Yadav, IAS (Principal Secretary to Government) convened an urgent meeting to discuss about the curbing of the tomatoes price. Co-operative Department officials participated in this meeting. Finally Pradeep Yadav ordered that all the 42 farm-fresh veggie outlets should stock two fold of tomatoes and should sell it at Rs 61.
