9 of 10 mobile phone users suffer Phantom Vibration Syndrome

According to a new study, nearly 90 percent of mobile phone users suffer from Phantom vibration syndrome which make them often mistake their phone to be vibrating in their pocket.

This phenomena is due to learned bodily habits, says Dr Robert Rosenberger, a philosopher and assistant professor, Georgia Institute of Technology.

Just the way specs turn to be a part of the body in a course of time, use of mobile phone also eventually make the device feel like a part of body, claims a research published in the Computers in Human Behavior journal.

This tends people mistake their muscle spasms or movements of cloths for the vibration of phone, but this is completely a hallucination, the professor says. I never have vibration turned on in my phone, and hence I do not suffer from the syndrome.

In a recent study made on undergraduates, it is reported that about 90 percent individuals experienced these vibrations of phones. The doctor said people are turning more and more anxious due to the various technologies in use. The emails, phone calls and social media notifications keep us on edge. We are so inclined and jumpy and realize something in our pocket which is merely a phantom vibration.
