TN fishermen to get distress transmitters to ensure rescue in case of emergency

Posted on: 11/Jan/2016 2:19:30 PM
The Tamil Nadu government has said that it will distribute Distress Alert Transmitters (DATs) to fishermen who go into the deep sea in the Bay of Bengal. The transmitters will help authorities identify and rescue them in case of an emergency at sea, by transmitting a short message that will show that position and type of emergency. The message will be relayed via satellite to the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) of the Indian Coast Guard.

The government has said that they will install 30000 such devices in fishing boats. Training will be given to the fishermen on how to use it. In its first phase, 1600 DATs will be installed.

The responsibility of procuring and distributing the DATs has been given to the Tamil Nadu State Apex Fisheries Cooperative Federation Limited (TAFCOFED). The Federation has a membership of 477 Marine Fishermen Cooperative Societies. The membership also includes 158 Fisherwomen Cooperative Societies, 141 Inland Fishermen Cooperative Societies and 9 District Fishermen  Cooperative Federations.
