A report released by the Forest Survey of India shows that Tamil Nadu`s forest cover has increased by 2501 sq. km. between 2013 and 2015. This is a 10.5 percent increase when compared to the previous bi annual period. The State`s increase in forest cover has resulted in a 65 percent increase of total forest cover in the entire country. Closely following Tamil Nadu in the survey is Kerala.

This is the third consecutive year in which Tamil Nadu has topped the Survey. In 2011, the cover spanned 28306 sq. km.; in 2013, 28710 sq. km; and in 2015, 30850 sq. km. The success of this initiative has been attributed to the afforestation programme, the current ones being the Tree Cultivation in Private Lands which is run by the Tamil Nadu  Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project, Massive Tree Planting Programme and Biodiversity Conservation Programme.

A senior Forest Department official said, We do web-based monitoring of the saplings. The Forest Survey report reflects the results of the saplings which were planted in the first two years of this project. Nearly 600 species of trees from 17 protected areas have been classified as vulnerable and threatened and efforts are on to protect these.
