World Rabies Day held

On the occasion of World Rabies Day in an awareness rally conducted at Madras Medical College in which over 500 professors, medical and paramedical students participated.
Dr S Ragunanthanan, professor of Medicine at the college, said, After any animal bite, the first thing one should do is wash the wound with soap and water. Then the victim must get anti-rabies vaccines, which is available free of cost all throughout the day in any nearby government hospital. The patient must take the complete course of vaccine without stopping.

A short, educative film was screened and handouts distributed to people on steps to be taken in the event of an animal bite, importance of immunization and responsibility of pet owners.
A public interaction programme and a continuing medical education programme for students were also organised.
Rabies is a deadly virus that can kill anyone who contracts it.
It causes around 59,000 deaths around the world every year with almost 60 per cent of the victims being children under the age of 15.
It can be prevented through vaccines.
People who are bitten by an animal, should wash the wound with soap and water and then get an anti-rabies vaccine.
They should complete the course of vaccines without a break.
The theme for World Rabies Day this year, is End Rabies Together.
