Chennaites are set to play a key role in the city`s infrastructure projects. Suggestions from the public are sought by the Chennai Corporation for executing the centre`s smart city project. An exclusive website was launched by the Union government which will mainly function to ensure that all the citizens take part in the project. So far, about a hundred suggestions are received.

A senior corporation official says, the primitive goal of this is to make Chennai one among the first list of twenty smart cities. With suggestions from the people, Chennai city can be a potential contender for getting shortlisted and fall under the list of 20 to implement Smart City Solutions in the first phase.

The last date for the public to share their suggestions is 15th of October. The first runner of the project is guessed to be T. Nagar, the commercial hub of Chennai and Chief Minister`s constituency RK Nagar.

Two projects are thought of in T. Nagar – grade separator that connects Anna Salai and Mahalingapuram by Usman Road flyover integration, and multi-level car parking facility. As non-motorized transportation is being promoted by the centre, construction of flyover is uncertain to happen.

According to experts, this smart city project is an excellent pathway for Chennai to improve all its transport infrastructure. In Chennai, mobility is a major problem faced every day, says Aswathy Dilip of Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP), an NGO.

Smart Chennai will comprise of mass rapid transit, safe footh paths, tracks for cycle that takes the commuter to home from bus stops, he adds.

Many of the residents have insisted restoration of water bodies like Adyar, Cooum, Buckingham Canal and Otteri Nullah. The very best place to live in will be in a city with clean river running through.
