Dont overdo antibiotics, say experts

In a move to tackle the over prescribing of antibiotics in the US, people are now encouraged not to run to their GPs (general practitioners) with coughs and colds. Instead, they have been recommended to rest at home and take fluids and painkillers. If necessary, they have been asked to see the pharmacist.

Health watchdog NICE has said that children should be taught at school about the dangers of antibiotics too often. They have said that the kids should know that drugs cannot cure coughs, colds, headaches or hay fever. They feel that antibiotics are losing their power to fight infections, as the bacteria will become resistant to them. Experts feel that, because of this, surgery and minor scratches will prove to be fatal, because of the over use of the drugs.

NICE published guidelines to GPs warning them that they will be referred to the General Medical Council if they over prescribe antibiotics. Says an official from NICE, The over-use of antibiotics in the last 30 years has led to microbial resistance, and with so few new antibiotics being developed, this could result in once-treatable infections becoming fatal in years to come. This new draft guideline focuses on interventions to help change people behaviour, and reduce antimicrobial resistance. It also aims to increase awareness, to both the public and healthcare professionals, of the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, and the risks this could involve... The over-prescribing by GPs (is a) hazardous practice... Patients (are) partly to blame however... There are people who are addicted to the idea of having antibiotics. It`s entrenched in our society. If they know there is a soft touch doctor they`ll go to them first. If not they`ll go to one doctor, then another, then they`ll go to A&E, try a walk-in centre.
