Chennai High Court has ordered the state of Government to send immediate circulars to stop beauty Contests in colleges & universities.

Ms. Lakshmi Suresh, from Annamalaipuram has lodged a petition in the Chennai High Court:

‘My daughter is studying in a private Engineering College.

During the year 2013, the students of Central Engineering College of Anna University conducted a cultural event called ‘Technofes’.

It was advertised that the event is funded by multi-national corporations and over 40000 students from 400 colleges in South India will participate in the cultural event.

An announcement was made that the female winner in the beauty contest will be given a   motorcycle, a cell-phone, and a cash of Rs. 10000/-.

My daughter used to participate in all contests with great enthusiasm from a very young age. She entered in the beauty contest and won the 1st prize.

However, only an appreciation certificate was given to her! No motorcycle, etc as announced! It is also understood that even the certificate may not be original!

My daughter was subjected to great disappointment and depression. I request that a compenastion of Rs. 5 lakhs must be paid by the Anna University Dean, Mr. M. Sekar, The student leader of Central Engineering College Arts council, Mr. Vignesh, and the person in-charge of the Technofest event, Mr. Sudarshan, and the event coordinator, Mr. Prabhakaran.’

Judge T S Sivagnanam conducted the enquiry on this petition and made an interim order:

This cultural event, Techofest, has been advertised on the website of Anna University with its logo. The question then arises whether the event was conducted with permission from Anna University. However, the advocate representing Anna University informed that no approval was given by Anna University.

However, the cultural event was conducted in the Anna University complex. Hence, this answer is not acceptable.

A decision regarding compensatory payment can be made by Chennai High Court only after receiving a detailed response from Anna University regarding this.

Cultural events conducted in colleges & universities should only bring out the talents of the students. I do not understand the purpose of making girl students taking a cat-walks in a beauty contest and its uses.

This is a totally unwelcome trend and an order must be given to stop it immediately.

Hence, the government of Tamil Nadu should send an immediate circular to the Secretary for Higher education, Director of Technical Education, and all universities and colleges to stop organising beauty contests for male & female students. It should be banned.

I am adjourning the case to 20th February. Anna University should be ready with its response.’
