INDIA IS A DUMBING GROUND FOR WORLD WASTES FORM DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

Posted on: 21/Aug/2010 1:47:49 AM
It’s no secret now that some very intelligent Indian business person solely with a view to making money ,conveniently oblivious of the harmful effects on people and environment are  accepting to import all kinds of non biodegrable or non recyclable wastes into India. Especially Tuticorin port fast is becoming a popular port for the wastes to be dumbed.

This time it is in Chennai port. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai, seized 127 tonnes of e-waste imported from four foreign countries from a container terminal here. The seized goods are re-exported to the country of origin. Of the total consignments, one each was imported from Australia, Brunei and Canada and two from Korea.
Examination of goods in the containers revealed the presence of computer monitors, CPUs and processors, which were found to be very old, used and appeared to be in an unusable condition. A large number of the computer monitors were found to be more than 10 years old, which were meant for recycling, Mr. Rajan said.
The import of electrical and electronic waste are covered under Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules 2008.
When will our business person become socially conscious? If money alone is the objective of business then there are so many ways. Let us be Indians and proud of our people. Our people will be proud of us only if respect them and concerned about their welfare.
In another case , The Madras High Court Bench here on Friday ordered probe the allegations that a private paper mill had dumped 253.16 tonnes of waste materials (broken toys, glass bottles, cotton waste, used batteries, broken CDs and hand gloves), imported from Greece through the Tuticorin port, in and around Sukkiravarapatti in Sivakasi taluk of Virudhunagar district.

Passing interim orders in a public interest litigation petition filed by a villager, a Division Bench comprising Justice D. Murugesan and Justice M. Duraiswamy directed the Virudhunagar Collector, Superintendent of Police, District Environmental Engineer, a representative of the mill and the petitioner to inspect the site in question and file a report before the court on September 6.The Customs authorities had ordered to send back all the containers to the countries of their origin within 15 days.
However, the paper mill did not comply with the order; the petitioner alleged and claimed that the entire consignment was disposed of in and around Sukkiravarapatti. He also alleged that the mill was in the habit of importing medical waste into the country in the guise of raw materials for making paper.

The Division Bench in its interim order said: “We are prima facie satisfied with the grievance of the petitioner. The Indian soil cannot be used as a dumping ground by anyone. As this Court can take judicial notice of such medical wastes imported at the guise of other materials and dumped in various places in this State, this must immediately be curtailed and the officers must be directed to take action i in this regard.”

The mill if found guilty and the allegation proved right should be closed and the  persons involved should  be  banned from starting any business apart from sentencing them life term imprisonment. It calls for nationalistic approach from the government.
