Special Wards for Prisoner Patients – City Government Hospitals

Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) in Chennai is the famous hospital for prisoners. It has committed convicts zone nearly with 20 beds.

This convict ward is similar to the other wards, except is has been wrapped under police securities, says the hospital authorities.

In addition to the GRH hospital, other government hospitals across the city namely Government Stanley Medical College Hospital and Gandhi Government General Hospital (GH) also grasp remand convicts for the consultations and treatments on the daily basis.  Prisoners are brought to the hospitals through vans along with 10 to 15 police personnel guards.

We will be managing most of the cases and in case of specific treatments or surgeries, we will recommend them to the specialty department in other GH hospitals, says a chief doctor at GRH. 

In case of highly vigorous prisoner is admitted in hospital, and then the hospital will be strengthen with the help of police men, so as to guard the building.

Presently, three victims (two men and a woman) who are passing their life span at Puzal, Trichy and Vellore prisons have been admitted in the cardio-thoracic surgery department at Government houses. All the three endured the valve replacement surgeries during the start of this month and it has been performed by the Dr. Raja Venkatesan, chief of the cardio-thoracic surgery department.
