Crackling Down on Auto Driver, Charging Additionally!

After a long break, the Chennai traffic police have been banging down the auto rickshaw drivers who seek additional charges above the meter rate preset by the State government.

On Saturday, the traffic police in join with the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) carried out the inspections at several congested areas like railway stations, commercial complexes and bus stops across the city. Nearly 62 overcharged autos have been confiscated. 

For the time being, this kind of inspections has been stopped for poll, and now it regains its action on the daily basis.

The helpline services of both the RTOs and the traffic police are energetic with calls and they might onset captivating deed on these complaints, said a senior traffic police official.

During August 25, 2013, state government has reworked on the auto fares after a pause of six years. As per the revised charges, Rs.25 has been charged for first 1.8km and for every extra kilometer Rs.12 per kilometer will be charged. During night time, 50% over the regular cost will be charged.

In addition to rectify the grievances through helpline, police department also involved themselves in validating the documents, colored stickers and vehicles lacking meters.

In order to control the vehicle on plying in the wrong route, the state government has to force the auto owners to append GPS facility along with the meter boxes, said S. Appanu, district secretary of CITU, south Chennai.
