Rail fare hike may be implemented by the new government

The outgoing Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday stalled a proposal for a hike in passenger fares and freight charges, earlier planned to be implemented on May 20.This would put the BJP-led government in an uncomfortable position. It will have to decide on a fare increase shortly after taking charge. An increase in freight would have a direct bearing on inflation. It was supposed to be a 14 per cent fare hike and five per cent increase in freight charge.
