Heavy rains in the month of February are usually uncommon in TN!!

As on Sunday morning, Cuddalore and Pondicherry broke records for the highest rains in 24 hours in February month. This was according to some weather bloggers. Mild rains were witnessed in the Chennai city and moderate rainfall was witnessed in districts like Vellore etc.

As per an officer belonging to the Regional Meteorological Department, Chennai, there is an upper air trough in the westerly wind at 5.5km above the mean sea level. Truth is that strong easterly winds at low level bring moisture from Bay of Bengal towards the coast of TN. Rainfall in TN was due to the wind speed convergence along the TN coast and also due to upper trough.

Many parts of Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Ranipet, Thirupattur, Sivaganga and Mayiladuthurai coastal districts had thunderstorms with heavy rains. The districts near Western Ghats were expected to have moderate rains. It must be taken into note that heavy rains were predicted in the districts of Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakuruchi, The Nilgiris, Theni, Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem. It is learnt that last night a good band of clouds moved into Pondy- Cuddalore belt.

It was brought out by the weather blogger Mr. Pradeep John that overall north coastal TN and north interior parts of TN would get good rains. Later on, the rains would decrease. He added that it would not be possible to predict rains in Chennai and just luck alone would bring good rains in Chennai.

There were mild rains in Chennai and on Sunday morning Nungambakkam recorded 6.5mm rains and Meenambakkam received just 0.6mm rains. In the next 48 hours, the skies above would be cloudy and Chennai would get light to moderate rains. The temperatures would be between 30 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius.

In the year 1930, Cuddalore received rains in February and on Sunday Cuddalore received 186mm rains and the record was broken. In the year 2000, 117mm rains were recorded in Pondicherry and on Sunday Pondicherry received 192mm rains and it shattered the record. The all time record for rainfall in February in these 2 places has caught the attention of many now.
