Many complaints began pouring in from various parts of TN regarding the technical glitches in the biometric authentication of ration cards is well known. It is now brought out that the civil supplies department has suspended the process and has gone back to the previous process of verifying the credentials using mobile phone numbers.

Issues like failure to authenticate beneficiaries plus devices not able to connect to servers due to which the staff at the ration shops couldn’t confirm the allotment to each beneficiary.

The top officers came to know about these technical glitches and they had discussions with Mr. Kamaraj, minister for food and civil supplies. In the meeting, the decision was taken to stop the process and revert back to the previous process.

It must not be forgotten that the machines installed with biometric readers were unable to confirm the identity of the beneficiary. This resulted in confusions in many places. Many complaints were made regarding technical issues in the biometric authentication of ration cards. The process has been put on hold temporarily. This was according to some official sources from the Secretariat.

Till the issues in the biometric authentication were ironed out, the previous process of verification of beneficiaries through OTP sent to their mobile numbers would be continued. This was mentioned by a top officer belonging to the department of food and civil supplies.

He then explained about how no beneficiary must be affected due to technical issues and essential food items must be supplied without any issue.

One ration one ration card scheme was announced by the central government and later TN government had gone ahead with the scheme and installed biometric authentication devices at all the ration shops in TN. It is worthy to mention that the CM of TN Mr. E. Palaniswamy launched the scheme in 32 districts of TN on 1st October.
