For the past 5 months in TN, more men have been infected by Coronavirus than women.

It is now said that for once the gender disparity has favoured fairer sex in the state of TN. The data has clearly shown that till Thursday, 27th August, 2.43 lakhs men or 60.4% have been affected by Covid-19 infection and this is high when compared to women as just 1.59lakhs or 39.6% have been affected.

The higher prevalence of co-morbid conditions in men than women has been responsible for this huge difference. This was according to some health experts and doctors.

It is important to mention that in the age group zero to 12, 52% males and 48% females have tested positive for the infection in TN. In the age group 13 to 60, 60.6% males and 39.4 % females were affected. In the 60 plus age or senior citizens category, more males have been infected than females

Dr. T.S. Selvavinayagam, director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine expressed his thoughts. He explained about how the behaviour of certain viruses is different depending on the gender.

He added that Covid-19 appears to pose higher threat for men than women. It is worth mentioning here that in TN the number of Coronavirus infection cases have been reported to be higher in men than in women. This was due to the fact that more men were exposed to the virus than women. The global data revealed equal rates of infection in both males and in females.

Deputy Director of NIE, Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur was of the view that men are more likely to go out for work and for other purposes when compared to women. The risk of exposure is higher for men than women. As per Dr. Kathiravan, Tagore Medical College Hospital, women follow more precautions than men.
