75000 guest workers sent to their natives from Chennai

Chennai Corporation along with police department and southern railways has been playing a huge role in sending as many as 75,000 guest workers to their native places. Important point is 20,000 persons are still waiting for the trains.

Since 9th May 2020, 55 trains have departed from Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore when Shramik special trains were started in Chennai. It must be noted that passengers plus others who were stranded in Chennai city were also sent to their natives.

It was pointed out by a West Bengal based IT employee of Chennai that the officials of Chennai Corporation had shared the contact numbers of the students and this helped her to be in touch with the students.

She added that the trains got cancelled due to Cyclone and on 27th May she boarded the train to her native. In the same manner, another person who works at the Chennai airport wanted to go to her native and she contacted the corporation. The Chennai Corporation made sure that these two girls stayed in touch.

As per the Chennai Corporation deputy commissioner, revenue and finance, Mr. Meghanatha Reddy, ever since the railways began Shramik special trains the GCC had kept the process simple.

He explained about the role played by assistant revenue officers and zonal officials in identifying the migrants and stranded passengers. He added that there were about 3000 persons in the relief camps and many had registered on the TN government website. There were various companies that had call centres and the corporation had joined hands with these companies and started calling people.

Later, list was prepared based on the destinations and then locations/ contact details were collected. The persons were then brought to the central railway stations through buses.

Important information is an amount of Rs 6.84 crores has been spent on buying train tickets for 75,922 passengers.
