GCC removes restrictions in nearly 800 containment zones

Till Wednesday, 27th May 2020, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has removed restrictions from nearly 800 containment zones. This has been done even when the Coronavirus positive cases in Chennai city have been increasing.
Chennai had just 356 containment zones on Wednesday and Royapuram zone has got the maximum number of containment zones 98. This is the highest in Chennai now. As many as 65 containment zones have been removed by the GCC on Wednesday alone. It is now revealed by the Chennai Corporation data that 795 containment zones have been removed since the outbreak of Coronavirus infection.
Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai corporation commissioner was of the view that the containment zone strategy has been successful. The control of the Coronavirus infection in Chennai has been shown by the removal of the containment areas.
Point is out of a total of 15 zones in Chennai as many as 137 containment zones have been released in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zone and 135 containment zones have been released in Royapuram zone.
It is now said that the rapid reduction in the number of containment zones in Chennai has been due to the GCC decision of reducing the containment period. Earlier the containment period was 28 days and it has been reduced to 14 days now. If no new positive cases found, then the restrictions have been relaxed by the officials in the containment zones.
In the past when Coronavirus began, the civic body sealed the entire street for containing the spread. Now, just the buildings from where cases get reported to get sealed.
