Posted on: 14/May/2020 9:55:10 AM
The resettlement colonies in Chennai do not have adequate spaces and this might lead to Corona virus clusters.

The 3 TNSCB resettlement colonies in Chennai in various places like Perumbakkam, Kannagi Nagar and Semmenchery have reported Corona virus cases. It must be noted that 27 residents belonging to the Kannagi Nagar had tested positive for Covid-19. Point is 13 were index cases and the rest household contacts. Koyambedu cluster has been responsible for the spreading of Corona virus infection to 7 or 8 persons and this has been in the index cases.

As many as 6 persons have tested positive in Semmenchery and 2 have tested positive in Perumbakkam. In both slums as well as in the resettlement colonies, it is impossible to maintain social distancing etc.

The officials belonging to TNSCB had revealed about the presence of more than 3 lakh households in 2170 slums in Chennai. There are more than 50,000 houses in the 3 colonies and the size of each house ranges from 120 sq ft to 400 sq ft.

A resident of Kannagi Nagar highlighted about the presence of 23,000 houses in Kannagi Nagar and in Ezhil Nagar. He then explained about how these houses were located close to each other and how it was difficult to follow social distancing. He also mentioned about the residents coming out of their houses to sit together outside for the sake of fresh air.

Another Kannagi Nagar resident pointed out that inspite of Corona virus positive cases in the locality Kannagi Nagar has not been demarcated as containment zone.
