Residents of Chennai would not have forgotten the Elephant Gate Bridge that was demolished.

This bridge straddled as many as 8 railway lines to Chennai Central for more than 80 years is known.

On 27th of April, the demolition works began and as many as 25 workers, 6 diamond cutting machines, 2 giant cranes, 3 earth movers were involved and it took 12 days to pull down.

It must be taken into account that the lock down done to prevent the spread of Corona virus issue has come in handy now and there is no need to suspend the train services. Information is few parcel trains were shifted to Egmore railway station for 2 days of work.

In 2008-2009 itself, the railways ministry had sanctioned an amount of Rs 43.77 crores but the work could not be carried out because it would disrupt road traffic on the busy Elephant Gate Bridge road and rail traffic from Chennai city’s busiest railway station Central station. It is known that this Central station catered to around 4 lakhs people a day. Now, the work has been carried out as neither the railways or the local body officials could make a move to tear it down.

The rebuilding of the Elephant Gate Bridge would be done using steel pans and it would be of more length than the original one. By this, railways would be able to lay more tracks leading out of Central station and Moore Market Complex suburban station.

Important information is the demolition and re-construction works have been awarded to Valecha-CSR JV in April in 2020. It was said by an official that soon pilling work would be started the bridge rebuilding works would be over in another 13 months. It is known that in the year 1933, the Elephant Gate Bridge or old 9-R bridge was first built.
