Posted on: 11/May/2020 10:06:07 AM
After the lock down gets lifted, the transport authorities have been looking at resuming the public transports like buses, metro trains, suburban trains plus MRTS services in Chennai. It is now said that the services would begun in a reduced scale, with social distancing in the initial days of time. After few weeks, the transport services frequency would be increased. .

Railways haven’t decided on the modalities to resume their services whereas MTC and metro rail are ready with social distancing norms. Approval from the Union ministry is awaited now by the southern railways. Point is metro trains would carry just 160 passengers and MTC has stated about the number of seats for social distancing. There would not be many standing passengers in the suburban trains.

The main issue is about overcrowding due to delays and it is now said that the officials and staffs are highly concerned about handling large number of passengers. For the sake of preparedness, government run transport corporations in TN have held small scale meeting with their employees on Friday and Saturday.

On Thursday, the state transport secretary Mr. Dharmendra Pratap Yadav had sent a circular to all the transport corporations explaining SOP to be followed for operating buses after lock down gets lifted. The circular mentioned about the limited frequency of buses in the beginning and later increasing the frequency as per the demand.

Important information is in Chennai in the MTC buses just 25 passengers could travel at a given time. The conductors of MTC buses have been issued instructions to make sure that the seat occupancy does not exceed 50 percent at given time and the distance between the 2 passengers to be atleast 6 feet. It was later revealed by a MTC bus conductor that at the bus stops it would be difficult to handle crowd especially if they had waited for long time.

In some districts outside Chennai, the autos have been in operation already and it has been the only mode of transportation without buses or trains. The autos have given permission just to carry one person at a time and action would be taken if this rule was not followed.

An official belonging to the state transport department expressed his thoughts and spoke about how there has been absence of clarity on how to formulate social distancing norms for the share autos in Chennai. It is known that share autos are not recognized as separate category of vehicle.
