On 10th May, Thirumazhisai market to be opened

More Corona virus positive cases from the Koyambedu wholesale market had resulted in the temporary shutting down of Koyambedu market and Thirumazhisai has been selected as the new place to set up market is well known.

The CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has made it clear that the new market at Thirumazhisai would be ready by 9th May 2020. For social distancing, measures are being taken now and this new market would start functioning from 10th May 2020. Information is some of the wholesale traders have decided to shift to the temporary market at Thirumazhisai.

Later, Mr. M. Thyagarajan, president, Koyambedu Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers Association mentioned that decision has been taken to shift to the new market after inspection was done on Thursday morning. He spoke about the absence of basic facilities at Thirumazhisai and how more facilities would be added when the market gets opened. On 5th May 2020, Koyambedu wholesale market was closed after it became Corona virus hotspot.

Truth is smaller markets in T. Nagar and Kodambakkam procured vegetables from other parts of TN and from AP for sale. Stocks of onions and potatoes that were unsold were also diverted to the smaller markets of the Chennai city. It was pointed out that the vegetables were sold at high rates.

Mr. D. Karthikeyan, member secretary CMDA, explained about the work that has been going on to set new market at Thirumazhisai. He added that 200 shops were being set up in the market and sales would be over by 8:30 am. To ensure social distancing at the new market, cautious approach has been taken now. He concluded that there would a distance of minimum 20 feet between the shops in the Thirumazhisai market.

It is worth mentioning that the entry to the market would be restricted and produce unloaded would be sent to the small retailers.
