Warning about Tasmac cluster issued with Corona virus cases going past 5000 in TN

On Thursday, the state of TN reported 580 new Covid-19 positive cases. The total number of positive cases in TN went past 5000 and is now at 5409.

Koyambedu cluster has been responsible for the increase in the number of cases in Chennai and its neighbouring districts are known.  Thursday saw the opening of Tasmac shops in TN and there were huge crowds at all the shops to buy liquor.

The public health experts and epidemiologists have warned that crowds at the liquor shops could result in another new cluster and more Corona virus infections.

It must not be forgotten that as soon as TN announced lock down many people rushed to Koyambedu market to buy vegetables. It is now said that yesterday’s heavy crowd at the TN Tasmac shops to buy liquor reminded about the heavy crowds at the Koyambedu market.

Former Chennai city health officer, Mr. Kuganandam spoke about how yesterday social distancing norms were violated by the people at Tasmac shops and how unwelcome consequence would be there in another 4 or 5 days in the form of new cluster.

There are now 2644 Corona virus positive cases in Chennai city with 316 recorded yesterday and the neighbors of Chennai registered fresh cases. It is believed that the Koyambedu cluster had affected atleast 22 districts in TN. When compared to Wednesday atleast 800 more persons were tested for Corona virus infection. Information collected is on Wednesday as many as 13,281 persons were tested for Corona virus in TN and on Thursday as many as 14,102 persons were tested.

Chennai has done 2476 tests per million and this was high when compared to the national average of 983 tests per million. This was according to the data from ICMR-NIE, Chennai.

It is important to note that Maharashtra has done 1549 tests per million, Delhi has done 3578, AP 2845, Kerala 977 and Gujarat 1339. The state of TN has also seen 63 positive cases per million when compared to the national average of 38. Revising of the testing protocol would be done by TN just similar to GCC and this was announced by public health department.
