Now, the prices of vegetables have doubled due to close down of Koyambedu market

Koyambedu wholesale market has been closed now after many persons got affected with Corona virus infection. In this situation, on Thursday, 7th May 2020, the prices of vegetables have doubled.

The shortage of vegetable stocks was given as the main reason behind the increase in the prices of vegetables. After the new market opens at Tirumazhisai, the prices of the veggies would come down. This was confirmed by Koyambedu wholesale market association office bearers.

It must be taken into note that till Tuesday all the vegetables were sold within Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kilogram. There were only limited stocks after the closure of Koyambedu market. It was mentioned by a vendor from Washermanpet market that once the new market opens the vegetable loads would arrive. 

The vendor then explained about how most of the veggies except 5 or 6 items were out of stock. At present, vegetables like beans are now sold at Rs 100 per kg, ginger and small onions at Rs 100 per kg, brinjal is sold at Rs 70 per kg, tomatoes at Rs 40 per kg and onions at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg.

Royapuram based vendor spoke about how the vegetables are being purchased from vendors who sell in carts now as Royapuram is in containment zone. The vegetables then get sold at double the rates when compared to the vegetables purchased got 2 days back. Vegetables like ladies finger was sold for Rs 160 per kg, potatoes at Rs 100 per kg, tomatoes at Rs 50 per kg.

In the past, Koyambedu market received 400 truckloads of vegetables every day and when the number of Corona virus positive cases increased in the market then just 170 truckloads was received. It is now said that for the last 2 days Chennai city has been managing with the vegetables they have now.
