To overcome the shortage of vegetables, the department of horticulture would be selling veggies and fruits from Thursday through shops set up at 5 locations in the Chennai city.

A meeting took place on Wednesday and it was decided in the meeting about making arrangements because the Koyambedu wholesale market has been shut down as the people did not bother about social distancing norms.

It is known that from Tuesday the vegetables and fruits have stopped arriving at the Koyambedu market from other states. The demand for the vegetables went up. Many retail traders stocked up on veggies mainly onions, potatoes, tomatoes etc and jacked up the rates steeply.

The prices of veggies rocketed shy high by the afternoon of Wednesday and this was as per the customers. Vegetables like beans, elephant yam, brinjal and other veggies etc that were sold for Rs 40 to Rs 50 just 2 days back were sold at Rs 80 and this was as per a south Chennai resident. According to a resident of north Chennai, a kilogram of tomato was sold at Rs 100.

It was later revealed by an official that earlier the Koyambedu market was getting 5000 tonnes of vegetables on average every day and it would not happen now but  there would be reduction in the demand.
