Posted on: 05/May/2020 10:28:38 AM
There were no officials available to regulate the crowds and the shoppers did not follow social distancing norms. The shops were allowed to open from 11 am in the morning till 5 pm in the evening is known. The shops were full of people.

It is worthy to note that in George Town in north Chennai is present Kothwal Chavadi, one of the oldest markets in Chennai. Point is more than 1000 grocery shops on Govindappan Naicken Street, Anna Pillai Street, Aacharappan Street and Varadha Muthaiyan Street were filled with many shoppers. The movement of two wheelers lead to more issues in these above said streets.

It was later revealed by a stationary shop owner that this experience clearly indicated that the shops should not be opened from 11 am till 5 pm. He suggested that it would be better if the timings get changed to 10 am till 1 pm so that the issue in Koyambedu would not happen in the George Town area.  A shopper expressed his thoughts and spoke about how there was no space at Broadway bus stand even to stand now as many shops opened here creating congestion.
