In Chennai, Amma canteen food NOT free anymore

With the lack of funds from the volunteers (mostly members of the ruling party) for Amma canteens, GCC has stopped providing free food to the needy from Monday.
There were directions issued to collect money for food at the Amma canteens ad this was according to a corporation official. He added that some Amma canteens are getting money from the volunteers and in those canteens free food is being provided for the needy. Since there was no prior announcement regarding the collection of money for food at Amma canteens, many customers were surprised and shocked.
A customer at Amma canteen in T. Nagar mentioned about how he came to get free food and how he arranged money. It is well known that from 23rd April 2020, Amma canteens were providing free food for the needy after getting funds from the volunteers. Many migrant workers, stranded persons and poor got benefited by this free food at Amma canteens till now.
The volunteers have stopped funding Amma canteens as the lock down has been relaxed and normalcy begin to return. Officials hinted about getting money from other volunteers to provide free food at Amma canteens. In the Chennai city, as many as 407 Amma canteens have been catering to around 4.5 lakhs people.
