Posted on: 25/Dec/2019 11:37:55 AM
Sardar Patel Road and Kamarajar Road in Chennai are highly busy roads and many vehicles pass through these important roads every day.

Important piece of news is these above mentioned roads plus various other roads present in interior and exterior part of Chennai would be re-laid by the Chennai Corporation. The point is corporation received a huge funding sanction amount of Rs 350 crores under various schemes.

An official belonging to special projects department of the corporation spoke about how the age of interior roads are 5 years and that of BRR or bus route roads are 3 years. He confirmed that the relaying work would begin after the monsoons and the contractors have been finalized.

An amount of Rs 200 crores has been sanctioned to re-lay roads in extended places like Perungudi, Madhavaram, Manali and Tiruvottriyur etc. In the extended areas, a total of 823 roads have been identified. It must be taken into account that the roads that are in worst condition would be re-laid and road cuts would be attended for fault rectification.

Now, as many as 500 interior roads have been identified for re-laying works in places like Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar and places in north Chennai etc.

Relaying of roads is now taking place in Uthamar Gandhi Salai of Nungambakkam and in Cemetery Road in Royapuram and Rs 70 crores has been allotted.

An amount of Rs 70 crores has been sanctioned to relay 60 BBR or bus route roads in Chennai. This is under TURIOP or Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Funds. It must be noted that there are a total of 304 BRR to a length of222 km and some of the BRR includes Velachery Main Road, Basin Bridge Road, Elephant Gate Road, Anna Nagar second and fourth avenue among roads in major places. The contractors did not adhere to the norms specified by the MORTH or Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Indian Roads Congress though the civic body has re-laid the roads.

There has been a clear violation of norms in the re-laying of Cemetery Road as new layer of asphalt was laid on the existing layer of asphalt. It is worthy to note that the hasty work has led to the roads coming off during the rains. It is brought out that the contractors would be monitored by the engineers and action would be taken for violations in the relaying of the roads.
