Prospects of further rains for the next 2 days in Tamil Nadu!

A low-pressure zone is prevailing over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the adjacent ocean zones near Sri Lanka and the adjoining South Tamil Nadu coastal area.

The Meteorological Department has informed that due to this, there are prospects for mild rains in a few places in Tamil Nadu and very heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in South Tamil Nadu on 3rd (Tuesday) and 4th (Wednesday) December.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) South Zone Vice-president S. Balachandran shared on Monday (2nd December) in this regard:

‘There is a prevailing low-pressure zone over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the adjacent ocean zones near Sri Lanka and the adjoining south Tamil Nadu coastal area. Further, there is another low-pressure zone developed over the west Arabian Sea. Due to this, there are prospects for rain on 3rd and 4th December

There are prospects of heavy rains in 1 or 2 places in south Tamil Nadu. There would be widespread rains in south Tamil Nadu over the next 3 days. It might rain in just a few places in north Tamil Nadu.

Presently, a low-pressure zone is prevailing over the southern coast. This is the main reason for the rains. Also, there is another low-pressure zone over the southwest Arabian Sea. There are strong prospects that this may further intensify and transform into a cyclone. Though it is located at a longer distance from Tamil Nadu, as the eastern winds would be blowing, there are prospects of rain in Tamil Nadu due to this.

The monsoon seasonal rains are in full strength presently in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. During the northeast monsoon rainy season, the average expiated rainfall in Tamil Nadu from 1st October to 2nd December was 360 mm. However, there has been a rainfall of 400 mm recorded so far! This is 11% more than the average.

There may be intermittent rains in the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs.

Warning to fishermen: Strong high-speed winds at 40 to 50 kmph are likely to blow across over the Bay of Mannar, Kanyakumari ocean area, Maldives, Lakhdiv, and Sri Lanka coastal area. So, the fishermen are warned NOT to venture into the sea for the next 2 days.

There have been widespread rains throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the last 24 hours. There have been very heavy rains in 3 places and heavy rains in 17 places,

Maximum rainfall of 180 mm has been recorded in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore district. Balavidudhi, Karur district and Coonoor in Nilgiri district - 130. Madhuranthagam in Kanchipuram district and Chozhavaram in Thiruvallur district - 100,  Chembarambakkam, Kodanadu in Nilgiri i district - 90, Periyakulam in Theni district and Sengundram in Thiruvallur district, Thamaraippakkam, Korattur - 80.
