Vinayagar Chathurthi Special Recipe Vellam Kolukattai

Compared to regular pooranam kolukattai, this vellam kolukattai is very easy and simple. This takes maximum 45 minutes to get done including preparation time. Let’s check out how it can be done:

Required ingredients
  • Rice flour - half cup
  • Jaggery - half cup (grated)
  • Coconut (grated) - quarter cup
  • Cardamom powder - quarter tsp
  • Ghee - 1 tsp

How to make vellam kolukattai?
Take the jaggery. This can be grated or shattered. Get this dissolved in half a cup of water. Make sure to keep the flame in simmer. Once the jaggery is fully dissolved, get it filtered without any impurities.

Get the rice flour for kolukattai ready.

Now, add the grated coconut to the dissolved jaggery and toss some cardamom powder to it.

It is time to add the rice flour now. Keep adding the flour in little portions using one hand. Keep continuously stirring the dough so that there is no lumps formed.

As you notice all the water getting evaporated well, finally, add a spoon of ghee and mi well. keep this in the stove for about five minutes.

Get this transferred to another plate. Get your fingers greased with ghee or oil. Start making oval shaped dumplings out of the dough using your hand. With your fingers, give a gentle press onto the dumplings. Keep doing the same for the entire dough.

Once all the dumplings are ready, steam  cook it for about 10 to 15 minutes until it gets fully cooked.
