This dumping of debris in the Marina loop road is grabbing attention

The news that Marina loop road has become an indiscriminate dumping yard for construction debris has been the topic of discussion for many now. It is now said that this dumping in Marina loop road is gross violation of CRZ or Coastal Regulation Zone rules. The point is both the local fishing community as well as the corporation of Chennai are blaming each other now for this. It has been pointed out by some that this indiscriminate dumping of construction debris was done in collision with the corporation. A local fisherwoman spoke about how she was not aware of the cause for the dumping of debris.
The news collected was the fisherman were asked to stop encroaching the loop road and debris from Nochikuppam settlement was dumped along the beach to level the place so that they could put their fishing stalls. According to K. Bharathi of South Indian Fishermen Association, the fish sellers needed the area between the road and the beach to put their stalls. Bharathi then added that the debris from the demolished building was used to level the area before setting up the stalls. Finally dumping of the debris was stopped a fortnight back because of the Chennai corporation’s objection.
Chennai city based environmentalist expressed her views and spoke about how the debris has been for a long time used for encroachment and how here it was a deliberate attempt done to widen the road. It must be taken into account that fearing backlash the officials belonging to the corporation of Chennai were not taking any action for dumping of debris or clearing the beach area.
The point to be noted is the rest of the Marina Beach is clean but the area near the loop road has got boats, fishing nets etc. As per an engineer belonging to the Marina division it is clear that debris gets cleaned periodically but dumping of debris takes place again and again.
An official later explained about the beach cleaning machines that were deployed to clear garbage and how except that particular stretch near the loop road entire beach was kept clean.
