Yes, sip some coffee to score more in math - we aren’t joking! A new study claims that your cognitive functioning will boost when you smell the scent of coffee. Apart from the physical boost, smelling coffee’s scent can improve your analytical performance. A better performance and scoring is possible on Graduate Management Aptitude Test or an adaptive test on the computer.

The Stevens Institute of Technology analysed the undiscovered force of coffee’s scent. It states not just about the hidden favors, but also the ways in which the scent helps in improving one’s analytical tasks. It says students can score and perform better in such tasks involving analytical skills.

The study involved analysing over a 100 undergraduate students split into two different groups. They were given with 10 GMAT algebra questions inside a computer lab. Of the two groups, one group was subject to ambient scent like coffee and the other group was made to perform in an unscented room. Surprisingly those who took up the test in the scented room performed better.

The study researcher states that our olfaction sense is very important out of all. In fact, we can make use of scents to improve our overall performance and experience, whether you’re an employer, a building developer, manager, architect, or others. There is very huge potential in this area.

A follow-up survey was also conducted where over 200 participants were involved. They were asked about what they believe about different scents and their effects on our performance. Most of them replied stating that they felt more alertness and energy when they smelled coffee’s scent as compared to floral scent or others or no scent at all. There is certainly an improvement in the overall performance, especially on mental tasks.

Furthermore, coffee also bring down the risk of diabetes, dementia or heart disease and increase longevity of our life.
