IIT students invent foldable house to help crisis situations

Following the Chennai floods and refugee crisis spread across the world in 2015, 3 students from the Indian Institute of Technology have come up with a new invention – foldable house for rehabilitating disaster victims.
Fourth year civil engineering students Gobinath, Shreeram, Akhilesh DSN and Santosh have made this invention and got recognized the Nation-level Social Enterprise Idea Challenge from the Azim Premji University held in Bengaluru.
At times of disasters when there will be heavy need for shelter, we need to manage time efficiently. Within 15 minutes, this housing facility can be installed by any non-technical person. On three sides, this house can be folded, thus making it very easy to port and is compact too. In a few minutes, it turns into a small box. From the original size, it can be folded for about 32 times, and can be carried to any place.
It is made of steel and aluminum composite panels. It has doubled layered walls for thermal insulation during severe climatic conditions.
It is likely that restroom fixtures will be included along with inbuilt bio-digesters, solar panels and a feature to add first floor, and improve the structure’s self-sustainability.
