It will take another one week time for completing construction of underground tunnels that links the different parts of city with north Chennai. So, with this, all the tunneling works to make the first phase of extension of metro rail project will get wrapped up. Works to construct the 3 underground stations and 3 elevated corridors covering 9 km distance shall continue to take place. This project of total worth of Rs 3,770 crore is likely to get operational by 2019.

According to the metro rail officials, the tunnel boring machines keep drilling the rest of the 465m stretch since end of September. On 24th September, works to construct first tunnel got over. Before 3 months of the schedule the tunnel boring machine completed works in Korukkupet station from Washermenpet. The 2-km stretch dotting the three stations including Washermenpet, Theagaraya College and Korukkupet will get connected with the underground tunnel.

Within a week to ten days, one more tunnel will get over. This is 5 months prior to the deadline. So a vast portion of underground work will get over, said a metro official. There are pending works along the tunnels such as installing tracks and signaling system.

It will take about 10 months to install tracks and signaling systems in tunnels. In all the three underground stations, the works shall take place simultaneously. The rate at which the tunnel boring machines work is 11m a day. This cuts through the soil that is clayey and is favorable for faster construction of tunnels. The very first tunnel boring got over in 6 months and there were no kind of glitch while the works got over. It crossed more than 480 buildings with shallow foundation and 310 bore wells including that of 10 open wells.
