Posted on: 22/Jul/2017 12:50:31 PM
Very soon, the cycle sharing system in Chennai city will get a mobile app developed by the Chennai Corporation. This app will be integrated with the other transportation modes and embedded with GPS in all the 4,976 cycles.

During the first phase, cycle track networks are to be launched in 200 stations in places including RA Puram, Marina beach, Teynampet, T. Nagar, Egmore, Nungambakkam and Chetpet. The total capital cost for this project is Rs 44.18 crore. Annually, about Rs. 10 crore is the estimated operational and maintenance cost. Annual revenue estimated from this is Rs 16 crore, said an official.

During a recent meeting, the need for viability gap funding was discussed. In spite of the cycle sharing system falling short of the financial possibility, it is expected that the project will be implemented so as to benefit hundreds of commuters.

In the second phase, areas including Adyar, Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar, K.K. Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, and Guindy are to be covered. As per the study conducted by the consultant, Rs 250 is going to be the annual subscription charge. Per person, the total registration fee will be Rs 1000. For up to 30 minutes, the usage is free of cost. For 30 to 90 minutes, the pricing is Rs 5 and for 90 to 240 minutes, it’s Rs 10.
