The Chief Minister E, Palanisamy announced in the Legislative Assembly that the 4th corridor of the Chennai Metro Rail Project would be extended up to Poonamallee.

As per the Legislative Assembly Act 110, the Chief Minister presented the details of the new proposals and projects to be taken up by the state government.

The next phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project will be 3 tracks -
  • From Madhavaram to Siruseri covering a distance of 45.77 km
  • From Chennai suburban outstation bus terminus to the Light House covering a distance of 17,12 km
  • From Madhavaram to Sholingnallur covering a distance of 44.66 km
The total distance for this phase will be 107.55 km including all 3 tracks above and will be at a cost of Rs. 85.047 Crores. The state government has approved this proposal as a policy and this has been sent to the central government for approval and also the funds for the project.

Apart from the above 3 tracks, a 4th track from the Light House to the Chennai Suburban Outstation bus terminus is also proposed by the state government.

Considering the heavy traffic in the Virgambakkam and Valasaravakkam areas, the state government has decided to extend this track from the Light House to Poonamallee via Vadapalani and Porur.

The Chennai Metro Rail will undertake the responsibility to prepare the detailed project proposal on this. This extension may cost an additional Rs. 3850 Crores.

Following the Metro Rail Projects in Chennai, there is a proposal to set up Metro Rail Service in Coimbatore to counter the increasing traffic.

Chennai Metro Rail will prepare the detailed project proposal for this as well. The funds for this project will be obtained from Germany’s KFW through the central government.
