Chennai metro service between Thirumangalam - Nehru Park from June

With the tunneling work having been completed in the section of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, the officials informed that it is planned to commence public service of the Chennai Metro Rail between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project work was in progress in 2 corridors - Chennai Washermanpet to Airport (23 km) and Central Station to St. Thomas Mount (22 km).

In the 1st phase, the section between Koyambedu and Alandur on the elevated track in the 2nd corridor are already in operation.

In both corridors, both elevated and underground routes are to be run. In the 1st phase, the tunneling work in the underground section between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park has been completed.

The public has been waiting with excitement for the Metro Rail services to start operating.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project officials explained that the activities of the 7.6 km long section between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park have been completed. The Metro Rail Safety Commissioner is scheduled to visit Chennai for the final inspection during April.

So, there are bright prospects for the public service to commence from June.

In this section, between Koyambedu and Thirumangalam is on an elevated platform. The section between Thirumangalam and Egmore is underground.

The signaling and electrification work between Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East, Shenoy Nagar, Pachaiyappas College, Kilpauk, and Nehru park has been completed. Test runs are being conducted.

In the extended Metro Rail Project between Washermanpet and Wimco nagar of 8 km distance, there will be 8 railway stations - Sir Theagaraya College, Korukkuppettai, Tondiarpet, Sungachavadi, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Thiruvotriyur, and Wimco nagar. The balance 6 railway stations will be in elevated mode.

Tunneling work will be done for the first 2 km distance from Washermanpet. The company AFCANS has been given the contract to start the work and it has commenced. The work on the balance 9 km will be started shortly. A target has been set to complete the entire project before 2018.
