Ingredients:
  • Black Channa (Kondai Kadalai) – 100 grams
  •  Melon Seeds – 2 spoons
  • Onion – 2 nos
  • Tomato – 2 nos
  • Garlic – 5 nos
  • Avaraikai – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Carrot – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Potato – 1 cup(chopped)
  • Beans - 1 cup (chopped)
  • Brinjal – 3 nos
  • Coconut – 1 small piece
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ spoon
  • Sambar powder – 1 ½ spoon
  • Salt – To taste
  • Oil – 5 spoons
  • Curry leaves – a few
  • Tamarind – a small lemon size
  • Cumin seeds – ½ spoon
  • Mustard seeds – ½ spoon
Method:
  1. Soak the black Kondai Kadalai overnight. Pressure cook it for about 5 to 6 whistle so as to make them very soft. Remove it in a separate bowl.
  2. Heat the kadai with 1 spoons of oil in it. Then add 1 cup each of chopped onion and tomato one after the other and sauté well. Then add the melon seeds in to it.

  3. Remove it in the mixer. Add the coconut piece and the soaked tamarind (just remove the unwanted twigs in the tamarind and just add it to the mixer). Add enough water and grind it to a fine paste.

  4. Again heat the kadai with 3 spoons of oil.  Then add garlic, one chopped onion, one tomato, chopped vegetables like carrot, beans, potato, avaraikari, and brinjal one after the other.

  5.  Sauté it well for about 3 minutes, until the raw smell leaves.
  6. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, water, salt to taste and close the lid for boiling or you can pressure cook the dish for 1 whistle so as to cook the vegetables well.

  7. Once the vegetable gets boiled well, add the pressure cooked the black Kondai Kadalai in to it.
  8. It’s time to add the grinded mixture (onion, tomato, melon seeds, coconut & tamarind). Stir it well and allow it to cook for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  9. Heat the pan with one spoon of oil. Now add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves for tempering and put it on top of the kozambhu.
  10. Hot and yummy Black Kondai Kadalai Kozambhu is ready to serve!

Note:
  • You can reduce the usage of tamarind and better increase the number of tomatoes in this dish, as it may elevate the taste and tang of the dish.
  • Do not waste the Kondai Kadalai boiled water, either you can add it to the kozambhu itself or you can prepare the Kondai Kadalai rasam.
Benefits of Black Channa:
  • Black Channa is highly rich in protein.
  • Either you can use the raw or sprouted Black Channa for this dish.
  • Soak the Black Channa for half a day, drain it and store it tight in a cloth. After one day you can notice the sprouted formation.
  • Using Black Channa, you can prepare many dishes like salad, Channa masala, curry, Channa kuzambhu, Black Kadalai Sundal and so on.
