Chennai Burns Up One - Fifth of the Electricity of the State!

For the past two years, the average power ingestion of the Chennai city stays still at 20 % based on the data imparted by the TamilNadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco).

With the consumption of about one-fifth of the total states electricity, Chennai influences high power shortage when compared to other cities in TamilNadu.

Of the total demand of about 3,000 megawatt (MW) in the Sate, Chennai’s part was about 1,500 MW, confirmed by a senior Tangedco official.

This figure obviously confronts that the domestic users instigating the major part in the city’s power utilization pattern.

In the past three years, because of its perpetual load factor, industries tops first with its power consumption of 37% and domestic sector ranks second with power ingestion ranging from 23 to 30 %.

In contrast, electricity intake ranges from 27 to18 % for agricultural rationale and 11.5% for commercial supplies.

As per the survey, peak power expenditure will be for four months amid May and August, and maximum power consumption during the June month.

The State ingested about 73,374 Million Units (MU) during 2012, conversely 73,356 MU during 2013, with highest consumption of 52,785 MU on June, 2013. It is since, June month attains peak summer, says a Tangedco official.
