Record-Breaking Heatwave Pushes Tamil Nadu Power Demand to Unprecedented Highs!

Posted on: 02/May/2024 10:17:19 AM

During an intense heatwave gripping Tamil Nadu, both the state and its bustling capital, Chennai, shattered all-time records for power demand and consumption on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu`s peak power demand surged to a staggering 20,701 MW on April 30, surpassing the previous record set just days earlier. Similarly, the state`s daily energy consumption skyrocketed to 454.32 million units, surpassing all previous highs.

Remarkably, this relentless heatwave has triggered simultaneous spikes in both power demand and energy consumption across the state and its urban heart, Chennai. On Tuesday night, Chennai`s peak demand surged to 4,383 MW, breaking the previous record set just last month. Energy consumption in the city also reached unprecedented levels.

With the Indian Meteorological Department extending the heatwave alert, it seems these records may only be temporary, according to a senior Tangedco official. Forecasts indicate Tamil Nadu`s power demand could soar beyond 21,000 MW, with Chennai`s demand potentially reaching 4,500 MW in the coming days. Nonetheless, the official assures that power supply will remain sufficient.

The surge in power demand is mainly attributed to increased usage of air conditioners throughout the day and night. However, there is hope on the horizon as rain is predicted for May 3, offering potential relief from the strain on power resources. Furthermore, wind power generation picked up significantly on Tuesday evening, providing a much-needed boost to meet demand while reducing reliance on external sources, as outlined by officials.
