Railway station subways creating issues for many commuters in Chennai in this rainy season!!
With the aim of providing the commuters with a safe way to cross the railway tracks as well as to access many railway stations in Vyasarpadi Jeeva, Perambur, Perambur Loco Works, Annanur and Tiruvallur etc. SR or Southern Railways constructed the subways.
Are these subways constructed near the railway stations in western Chennai serving their purpose now?
The heavy rains in Chennai have especially made the western section of suburban railway station subways flooded and this has made the lives of many commuters difficult. The commuters now are unable to access the railway stations in the western parts of Chennai due to heavy water stagnation in these subways.
It is really shocking to note that the subways have leaks and due to this rain water flooding takes place making the subways inaccessible for the public.
It was later explained by Mr. Raghukumar, Convenor of Perambur Neighbourhood Development forum that the subway at Perambur Loco Works railway station was built just a few years back. He added that the subway was flooded even during light rains also. The subway was shut down for restoration works for several months and was reopened without being restored properly.
It was brought to light by a few commuters that Vysarpadi Jeeva and Annanur railway stations get inundated every NE monsoon season. For more than a month, the subway at Annanur (that was constructed to help the public to cross the railway line safely) has been under water. This was according to Mr. T. Sadagopan, activist. He spoke about how this has been creating huge issues for students especially who have to climb the railings installed in the subway to reach the Annanur railway station.
It was revealed by a senior official from Chennai division of SR that measures have been taken to pump out water present at the subway at Perambur Loco Works railway station.
