Gone are the days when students went to libraries to read books and spent time there!! Times have changed now!!

To inculcate the reading habit in the students, the TN higher education department would be doing this sensational work.

The news that has emerged out now is that the libraries present in the government arts and sciences colleges in Tamil Nadu would be upgraded and digitised. Truth is that 17 arts and sciences colleges in TN have got digital libraries but they are old fashioned. An amount of Rs 85 crores has been allocated to upgrade these libraries. This was confirmed by some officials belonging to the TN higher education department. Ten digital libraries would be set up in the government colleges present in the backward districts in Tamil Nadu and an amount of Rs 93lakhs has been allocated for this.

It was later mentioned by an officer that the project would be taken up on a priority basis and the work would get completed by the end of 2022.In all the government arts and sciences colleges in TN, digital libraries would be started in a phased manner.

Mr. K. Padmanabhan , retired principal of government arts and sciences college expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how the learning process has changed totally now with online mode of education. He threw light on how in the past many students were not interested in visiting libraries or reading books outside their syllabus. It is true that now the students are finding it tough to read even the physical textbooks and want everything in digital format. The students would get instant access to resources through digital libraries only.

Not only enrolment would be increased by the Tamil Nadu state government but also student skills and employability would be increased. All resources would be provided under one roof for the students.

Creating digital libraries would be good but it is essential to maintain and upgrade them with quality resources. This was according to some academicians. It must be noted that the 17 digital libraries for which the funds have been sanctioned were started almost a decade back. Lack of proper maintenance has led to these libraries becoming outdated and they could not be used by the students. As per a principal belonging to a government college it was clear that there would be no use for the project if the libraries could not be maintained well.
