Why has there been a decrease in RTE admissions in the schools in Chennai and TN now?

It is known that the TN government has been planning to increase the school admissions under the RTE or Right to Education. The news is that the number of kids admitted to the private schools under the Act over the years has gone down drastically.

Point to be noted is that RTE was implemented in TN from 2013-2014 ensuring 25% reservation for students belonging to weaker sections in all private minority self-financing schools at the entry levels like LKG etc. In 2016-17, the RTE admissions were at 97506 but in 21-22 the figure was 56587 only. This was brought out by the statistics of the school education department.

The number of RTE admissions increased for a few years but it declined gradually in TN and this was as per a senior officer from the school education department.

The senior officer provided correct statistics of RTE admissions from the time it was launched in TN. The number of RTE admissions was 49864 during 2013-14 and in 2014-15 RTE admissions went up to 86729. In 2015-16, the number of RTE admissions was 94811 and in 2016-17 it touched 97506. Ever since RTE admissions were introduced, around 6.6 lakhs students were admitted in the private schools in TN.

It was pointed out by an officer belonging to Directorate of Matriculation that though the children admitted under RTE need not have to pay school fees but they would have to pay for their school uniforms, books etc and that were expensive This might have led to decrease in RTE admissions. He threw light on the fact that many parents who were affected financially due to Coronavirus pandemic preferred government schools only as these schools provide school related items free of cost.

Even poor kids could get into private schools and that was the main objective of RTE. This was as per Mr. P.B. Prince Babu, general secretary. Bitter fact is that such admissions do not ensure that the kids from poor backgrounds were equal to their rich counterparts.

Improving the infrastructure of the government schools would be the solution instead of RTE admissions. This was as per Mr. P.K. Illamaran, president of TN Teachers Association.
