Online classes to continue - TN govt to do this for the benefit of the students

Posted on: 17/May/2021 9:17:41 AM
The college students have been studying through online classes as the colleges have been shut down to control the spread of Covid-19 infection in TN. Point to be noted here is that the validity of free data cards for these students belonging to TN colleges have almost ended.

In this scenario, the newly formed TN government would be expected to decide on extending the usage period of the data cards. This is due to the fact that online classes would be continuing for atleast another 2 months of time. It is known that the fresh Coronavirus cases in TN have gone over 30000 now and the government is trying its best to bring the infection under control.

Previous AIADMK government in the month of January in 2021 grabbed many eyeballs when it introduced this free data scheme for the students. Fact is that more than 9 lakhs students (who could not afford internet for online classes) have been getting benefited under this scheme. The 4 month free data package was over for most of the students and this was mentioned by a senior officer belonging to the school education department.

He explained how only a small section had entered the scheme in the middle of January and how a few days are left. Truth is that many students have been requesting to extend the data usage for another 2 months so that they would be able to complete their online classes and appear for the examinations.  The higher authorities must take up a decision regarding this.

Mr. R. Damodharan, convenor, Joint Action Council of College Teachers or JAC spoke about how the validity of free data package was completed and how many students have to get one on their own. It must be noted that Mr. Damodharan has been taking online classes for a Chennai city based government college. He added that a larger number of students would benefit if the TN government extended this free data scheme for another 2 months.

President, AUT, Mr. N. Pasupathy was also of the view that extension of the free data scheme for another 2 months would be highly beneficial for the students. He threw light on how students belonging to the government colleges were able to participate in the online classes on par with those belonging to the private colleges. Information is that this free data scheme has also helped many students in the private colleges to receive scholarships.
